History of the University of Wilmington, North Carolina. The University North Carolina at Wilmington began as Wilmington College on September 4, 1947, a junior college. In 1948, Wilmington College was given membership into the American Association of Junior Colleges. On July 1, 1963, Wilmington College began offering bachelor's degrees by decree of the North Carolina General Assembly. Finally, on July 1, 1969, the school’s name was changed to the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
